The ideal location for the summer lilac is warm and sunny
Do not be fooled by its name: The summer or even butterfly lilac (Buddleja) is not related to the real lilac (Syringa). The ornamental shrub originates from the subtropical and tropical regions of this earth and is considered in Europe due to its joy of propagation as a neophyte.
Summer lilac loves the sun
According to its origin, the summer lilac, swarmed by a striking number of butterflies, prefers above all warm and sunny locations, where it can really bring out its lush blossoms. At best, depending on the variety up to four feet high and equally spreading shrub is also on well-drained, light soil. This you have optimally enriched before the planting with mature compost. If there is no full sun, the summer lilacs also thrive in the light partial shade - but it must not be shady, even a heavy, loamy soil does not like the plant.
Location is sort-dependent
Furthermore, the optimal location for the summer lilac is still species and variety dependent. Many popular varieties - Buddleja davidii, for example, with its cultivated forms - are quite undemanding and also thrive on lean, gritty soils. Others, such as the yellow summer lilac (Buddleja x weyeriana) and the ball-summer lilac (Buddleja globosa) are very sensitive to frost and should therefore not be planted in the garden. In a sufficiently large planter, however, these varieties are in very good hands.
Design options with summer lilac
The summer lilac is suitable for the planting of perennial beds and borders as well as for use as a specimen plant. Since the ornamental shrub is often bare in the lower part, it can be planted very well with lower perennials or even summer flowers.
Tips
Caution: summer lilac needs a lot of space! Depending on the variety, the bushes grow up to four meters high and just as wide - if you do not want to constantly cut them back, you should already consider the expected size when choosing a location.
