A healthy summer lilac (Buddleja) can be recognized by its rich green leaves, the lush growth and the numerous trained flowers. However, these features only appear if the shrub is regularly supplied with sufficient nutrients, otherwise less flowers form and the leaves turn yellow.
Fertilize summer lilac in the garden
Summer lilacs planted in the garden are best supplied with natural fertilizer, with horn shavings or flour in particular, but also compost and manure very well suited.
Start fertilization at the planting
Already during the planting you can add a handful of horn shavings as well as some compost to the excavation. This gives the young shrub the necessary power to start and helps it to grow more easily at its new location.
Fertilize older plants
Older plants should be supplied with organic fertilizer twice a year. Start with a first dose of compost and horn shavings before the shoot in March, the second dose will finally be in June.Carefully work the fertilizer into the root area, but do not damage the root strands, which are sometimes close to the surface. If you prefer to use complete fertilizer, fertilize twice a year. However, be sure to choose a flower plant fertilizer with low nitrogen and more phosphorus content - this ensures a beautiful flowering.

If, on the other hand, the summer lilac is cultivated in a planter, fertilize it between March and September approximately every two weeks with a liquid fertilizer for flowering plants. Again, the fertilizer should contain less nitrogen and more phosphorus. Nitrogen provides for a stronger growth of shoots and leaves, so that the bush is less energetic in the desired flowering. If possible, administer the fertilizer together with the irrigation water.
Soil or substrate should not be too rich
Even if summer lilac must be fertilized regularly, it should still not be on a too rich soil. The shrub feels most comfortable on a sandy, well-drained ground - as the numerous specimens thriving on embankments show well.
Tips
Even the casting of the summer lilac wants to be learned: the shrub should not dry out, but it must not be poured over. It is best to always do a finger test before casting to determine the need. On very hot summer days or during periods of drought, planted specimens can tolerate additional watering, but this depends on the location and the soil. Bucket plants, on the other hand, are always dependent on regular water supply.
