Picturesque look with floating plants in the garden pond
Many of the domestic floating plants in the garden pond can easily overwinter in the pool and otherwise require only little care. When properly distributed, they are excellent nutrient recyclers and shade donors that slow down algae growth and regulate gas exchange.
Those who want to do without the unwanted growth of algae in their pond can already achieve a great deal with a balanced selection of floating plants. Floating or reaching to the bottom of the basin roots provide the necessary nutrient balance, the voluminous leaves are welcome shade donors and also serve the pond dwellers as a welcome hideaway.
The effect of floating plants
Primarily with shallow, slightly smaller ponds the relatively large leaves of swimming fern, frog bite or water hyacinths prevent the disproportionate increase in temperature of the pond water, which in turn has an advantageous effect on oxygen content and gas exchange within the basin. Apart from that, the visual impression of well-thought-out plant communities, which may still flower differently at different times, is particularly pleasant.
Location and selection of pond plants
We distinguish swimming and Schwimmblattpflanzen, whereby the first kind gets along completely without earth and grows exclusively in the standing, if necessary also very slowly flowing water. Therefore, this genus of plants may not be settled near streams. The water depth should not be less than 20 cm, taking into account the expected growth of the floating plants in the garden pond. The profile of some favorites, which should be set in the pond from May at the earliest:
Floating plants reproduce themselves
Many species are very prone to reproduction, so regular pruning is required. In soil or substrate rooting plants are divided at the root ball and places the resulting individual pieces at the new location in separate containers. Offsprings in the Schwimmblattpflanzen can be obtained from the buds and shoots of the mother plants.
Tips
Who decides not hardy plant species, sets or purchases them most easily in pond lattice baskets. This makes them particularly easy to convert into their winter quarters in late autumn and is better protected against possible flushing.
