Plant a wheelbarrow nicely
You have an old wheelbarrow at home that you no longer use? You do not have to dispose of them, you can plant your wheelbarrow and get an attractive deco element for your garden. We'll see below.
Step by step plant the wheelbarrow
1. Preparation
Before you turn your wheelbarrow into a flowerbed, you should make sure that moisture does not harm it. Therefore, it is advisable to delete them. You can skip this step as well, but then you have to live with the fact that your wheelbarrow is rusting.
First, clean your wheelbarrow thoroughly with a brush and a little water. Let it dry and then roughen the surface with sandpaper. Remove any rusty spots as much as possible.
2. Drainage
Now drill several holes in the wheelbarrow floor so that excess rainwater can drain off. This is very important because almost all plants are extremely sensitive to waterlogging.
3. Paint the wheelbarrow
Put some foil or newsprint under the wheelbarrow if the paint drips and strokes or spray your wheelbarrow with paint as you like. Paint your wheelbarrow on the inside, so that the damp earth can not harm it. Use only non-toxic colors, especially if you want to plant the wheelbarrow with vegetables or herbs. Allow the paint to dry well before proceeding (observe manufacturer instructions!).
4. Fill the wheelbarrow with soil
Before you fill your wheelbarrow, you should put it in the final location. Once the wheelbarrow has been planted, it is much harder to move, especially when the wheel stops working.
As the lowest layer, place several centimeters of stones, broken ceramics or expanded clay in the wheelbarrow. This layer prevents the drainage holes from clogging and provides additional protection against waterlogging.
Then fill the wheelbarrow with ground just below the rim. If you want to grow vegetables or heavy plants, mix some compost under the ground.
5. Plant the wheelbarrow
Now put the plants in the wheelbarrow. Choose only small or flat-rooting plants and ensure a sufficient planting distance. You can also sow plants directly in your wheelbarrow.
Pay attention to the location! Most plants feel most comfortable in a sunny to partially shaded spot.
