Set the onions of snowdrops correctly
Snowdrops - These known early flowering plants are among the plants that form one to several onions underground. What should be considered when setting the onions?
Planting time for the onions
The bulbs that are available at the hardware store, garden center and the Internet, and which can be spotted in the supermarket at one time or another, should ideally be set up in the autumn. Ideal is the period between the end of September and mid-November. On the other hand, the preferred snowdrop plants must be planted in spring at flowering time.
How deep and how must the onions be set?
The onions, which should be plump and healthy, are put into dug holes. The soil in it is well broken before setting. If it is low in nutrients, some compost, manure or horn shavings are sprinkled into it. Basically, a humus rich, permeable and slightly alkaline to neutral soil is best.

At the same time as the snowdrop bulbs, the onions of other early flowering plants can be planted. Generally, the onions of snowdrops have no problem with planting neighbors. They work well with crocuses, daffodils, tulips, winterlings etc.
Caution: onions are poisonous
The fact that all parts of snowdrops are poisonous is not negligible when planting onions. In particular, the onions contain a high content of a toxic alkaloid. Therefore, it is advisable to wear gloves when putting onions and handling them.
Later multiply the onions
In the year after the setting of the onions they can already serve to increase. After the heyday of the snowdrop, it forms so-called bulbous bulbs underground. They are separated from the main onion and planted separately.
Tips & Tricks
If you want to set the bulbs in the summer, you should take care to water the soil regularly. Otherwise there is a risk of the onions drying out.
