Wanted poster to the snowdrop - a umfaser overview

Who does not know, the snowdrop? It delights the eye with its delicate bloom at the bleak winter time. Many gardeners plant it as Frühblüher in the garden. But what information is worthwhile to be brought to mind before planting?

The snowdrop - short and wide in the profile

A poisonous beauty that stands under conservation

The snowdrop is poisonous in all parts and is protected. Among other things, it is the substance called galantamine, which makes it toxic to the body when consumed. But low doses of this substance are used in medicine to relieve Alzheimer's. Further names for the snowdrop are among other milk flower, white virgin, snow piercer and Marienkerze.

Viewed from top to bottom

At the bottom, the snowdrop forms an onion. It will last for many years with her. Even low temperatures do not cause him any problems. It is perennial in this country and very hardy. It does not matter whether it is in the sun, partial shade or shadow. As an ornamental plant, it can be used in many ways, for example in the rock garden, in the flowerbed, in borders, on the edge of the wood and on the lawn.

A leafless stalk shoots up from the onion in winter. At the bottom 2 to 3 leaves are formed. They are pointed and green colored. At the end of the stem a flower is created. It opens in most snowdrop species between January and March.

The flower is nodding, bell-shaped and with it the snowdrop reaches a stature height between 10 and 30 cm. Three large and three small petals stand together and hide the stamens and carpels in the middle. After the flower has withered, capsule fruits develop, which reach maturity in April and like to sow themselves.

Tips & Tricks

The snowdrop is sometimes confused with the lily of the valley. But both are very different. The lily of the valley has several flowers among others, while the snowdrop has only one flower.
