Hibernate the lily: cut off leaves or not?
The African ornamental lily (Agapanthus) is cultivated in Central Europe as protected wintered container plant. The exact plant species makes the difference whether the African lily is overwintered with or without its leaves.
Different types of lily
Some lilacs overwinter evergreen and retain most of their leaves even in winter quarters. Others, on the other hand, gradually get yellow leaves in autumn, which eventually die off. The leaf-feeding lilies winter only the rhizome stuck in the soil, this forms new leaves in spring. The dying leaves should be removed during wintering, so that it does not come to rot or mold.
