Fertilize reeds properly
Reed belongs to the grass family and is extremely widespread on our continent. It grows mainly on the banks and in wetlands. What nutrients it needs for a good growth and when a fertilizer is useful, we explain below.
Reeds are very undemanding
The term reed usually means reed or miscanthus. An overview of the reed species we give you here. Both reed and miscanthus are very frugal and can cope with just a few nutrients. It is important that sufficient water is supplied. If the reed stands on the edge of a stream, you do not need to pay any attention to it.
Care in the planting year
It is best to plant your reeds in spring. Then it has a whole year to get used to the location and comes through the winter.
In the first year you should not fertilize your reed!
Especially important in the first year is watering, so that the roots can grow well. It is highly recommended to plant a root barrier when planting so that the reeds can not proliferate.
Reed little fertilize
In the following years, it is sufficient if you pamper your reed or Chinese reed once a year with some compost. Alternatively, complete fertilizer is also suitable. But beware: do not over-fertilize your reed! The motto here is: Better not enough than too much. Over-fertilization can cause discoloration of the leaves and, at worst, the ingestion of the plant.
When is fertilized?
The best time for fertilization is the spring after pruning, when the first stalks sprout. So you provide your reeds with the necessary nutrients to grow healthy and fast. If you have forgotten to fertilize in the spring, you can easily fertilize even in the summer. Fertilization should be avoided only in autumn, as otherwise you will give the reed, which is preparing for the wintertime, an unnecessary growth spurt.
Tips
More important than fertilizing is choosing the right location. Reeds like it moderately moist and sunny to partially shady. Also on the balcony and as a potted plant it grows well.
