The false cypress becomes brown: causes and treatment
If cypresses suddenly get brown spots or dry up the shoot tips and die, caution is required. There may be a disease. Sometimes pest infestation is to blame. In most cases, however, these are care mistakes.
Diseases or pest infestation
False cypresses can get brown spots due to fungi or pest infestation. In case of fungal diseases, the shoot tips die off; in case of pest infestation you will find feeding marks and sometimes very hollow branches.
Cut out the infested plant parts generously.
With very strong infestation, there is often nothing left but to dispose of the false cypress and replace it with a healthy specimen.
Brown spots in unfavorable location
If the cypress is not properly cared for or grows in a bad location, it can also turn brown. If the location is too shady and the soil is too moist, the plant reacts with brown spots.
Further care mistakes can be:
Make sure the root ball is always slightly moist but never completely wet.
Fertilize regularly with organic fertilizer. But do not overdo it. Mulch blankets have proved to be very cheap among the false cypresses. They prevent the soil from drying out and provide the plants with new nutrients on a regular basis.
Never cut into old wood. In these places, the cypress does not go out, but turns brown.
Shoot tips turn red or fall off in the fall
If the shoot tips turn reddish, that is not so dangerous. The cypress then just got too much direct sun. This can happen in hot summers.
Simply cut off the affected shoots. The plant quickly recovers from it.
Even if the cypress loses instinctual leaps in autumn, this is not questionable, but a completely natural process.
Tips
False cypresses tolerate neither road salt in winter nor urine from dogs and other animals. Therefore do not plant the ornamental shrubs too close to roads. Animals should be kept out of the garden anyway because of the toxicity of the plants.
