Detect and eliminate pests on roses
The infestation with animal vermin is often heavily dependent on the weather and can fluctuate greatly during the year. In many cases, a little patience helps, because the natural balance is usually restored by itself.
Fighting rose pests
Sometimes, however, the damage can become too great, then help proven natural home remedies and - in rare and particularly serious cases - the use of beneficial plant protection products.
Rose cane borers
Dry, brown shoot tips are an indication of an attack with the pink shooter (Ardis brunniventris). Its larvae feed on the inside of the shoot both up and down, thus causing the overlying instinct to die off. Cut off infected shoots a few centimeters below the dead part and dispose of them with the household waste.

Roses are usually attacked by the usually green-colored rose aphid, which suck on buds and shoot tips. This cripples leaves and flower buds and are finally discarded. In case of a slight infestation it is sufficient to collect the animals by hand or to spray them with water in the early morning. Be careful with the use of neem preparations, because these lead to some buds on some roses.
Rosenblatt tiphiidae
The rose leaf wasp (Blennocampa pusilla) lays its eggs at the edges of the rose petals. These then protectively roll around the larva and then turn yellow and fall off. Remove infected leaves and be sure to collect all the leaves from the ground. Dispose of with household waste, as the larvae develop on the compost and the roses can re-infest the following spring.
Rose sawfly
The larvae of the rose-leaf wasp (Caliroa aethiops) eat at the top of the leaves and cause so unsightly damaged areas, which dry out after some time and leave holes (the so-called "window damage"). Remove affected leaves and discard them with household waste.
Rosenzikade
Rose cicadas (Typhlocyba rosae) are greenish, small and jumping insects that suck on the underside of leaves, causing whitish discolourations on the surface.These have a speckled mosaic. Cut back on infested shoots and spray the roses early in the morning with stinging nettle broth, especially on the undersides of the leaves.

Spider mites (Tetranychus urticae) do not belong to the insects but to the arachnids. They are almost invisible to the naked eye and appear especially in hot, dry weather. However, an infestation soon shows itself through the fine webs on the underside of the leaf and between the leaves. These then show a fine, gray-white mottling. Infested shoots should be completely removed and disposed of with household waste.
Tips
Especially in aphids, the chemical club is often unnecessary, because hungry birds and beneficials quickly decimate the louse population. Just make sure that the beneficial insects in your garden feel good - for example, through dense hedges, nesting boxes and insect hotels.
