Sorrel: time and importance of flowering
On many heavily fertilized meadows, the flower sips of the sorrel tower up to a meter high in early summer. Between May and June, the flowers provide red spots of color amidst the green meadow landscape.
Bloom and seeds of the sorrel
The rather inconspicuous single flowers of the sorrel stand out in long, reddish panicles on a stem from the plant. If you want to permanently fight sorrel in the lawn, you should remove the flowers before composting the numerous seeds and compost far away from the site. Since the seeds are stable for up to three years and remain germinable in manure, the sorrel spreads uncontrollably under suitable conditions.
Use the flower as an indicator
Although the sorrel is not directly toxic when consumed, various factors indicate a high concentration of the oxalic acid contained:
Harvest fresh green leaves from the sorrel before flowering from May to July. Then even less of the stomach-irritating oxalic acid is contained in the plants.
Tips & Tricks
The removal of the sorrel flowers is important for the control of the plant population, since the control of sorrel in the lawn is already difficult.
