The column cypher is only partially hardy

The column cypress also known as Tuscan cypress or Mediterranean cypress is one of the common tree species around the Mediterranean. The evergreen, very slim in the height awake tree is also quite popular in local gardens, he conjures but a little Mediterranean flair north of the Alps. Unfortunately, the otherwise very easy-care woodland is not really hardy for us - even with prolonged temperatures of more than minus ten degrees Celsius, the column cypress freezes.

However, the temperature specification only applies to tree nursery items grown under local conditions, not trees brought in from Italy or otherwise imported. These do not tolerate even a few degrees of freezing and these only for a short time! For this reason, it is recommended to plant column cypresses only in climatically mild regions (such as a vineyard region) or to keep the tree in a sufficiently large bucket. Then, however, a regular pruning is essential, after all, column cyphers can reach heights of 20 meters and more.

Plant column cypresses in a protected location

Anyone who decides to plant the column cypress should place it in a sheltered place - a sunny and warm location without draft increases the resistance to cold once again. In this case, "protected" means that the tree should stand in front of a house wall or wall and in particular must be protected from the cold east wind. In addition, only older column cysts should be planted as younger specimens are much more sensitive - these are better to cultivate in the pot the first few years and frost-free, but cool and bright to overwinter.

The correct wintering of a column cypress

Colony cypresses in the pot overwinter as brightly as possible at a maximum of five degrees Celsius - the evergreen tree does not tolerate frost, but still needs a winter break. Planted specimens are best packed in a special garden mat or in jute sacks - the material should not only be airy but also translucent. After all, it is an evergreen plant that needs light even during the winter break. A lightless or low-light packaging should therefore only for a very short time - for example, during a strong frost period - done, but then immediately removed. Please do not pack the coniferous tree in plastic foils or similar, as the humidity in the air rises too high and fungal infections are promoted.

Tips

Instead of taking the risk with a not sufficiently hardy column cypress, you can instead plant visually similar, but much more robust coniferous trees. These include u. a. Leyland cypresses, columnar yew, thuja, cypress trees or other cypresses such as the very hardy Arizona aryon cypress.
