Column cypress conjures Mediterranean flair in the garden

The columnar or Mediterranean cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) is widespread in the Mediterranean. There, the very slender, evergreen tree reaches heights of growth of up to 35 meters. Here, too, the fairly easy-care greenhouse can be cultivated both in the garden and in the pot, with young cypresses especially requiring good winter protection.

Cultivate column cypresses properly in the garden

This type of cypress is considered to be easy to maintain, at least if you choose a well-grounded site with suitable soil and also provide sufficient water. Basically it was already with the care, because actually is not even a pruning really necessary - the tree grows by nature in a columnar in the air. But beware: column cyphers are extremely fast, so from time to time the scissors should be pulled out. However, avoid cutting off the top of the tree - otherwise the typical form of growth will be lost and the cypress will instead grow in width.

Suitability as hedge or solitary

Säilenzypressen are, not least due to their Schnittverträglichkeit, used in this country very much for hedge plantings. However, the very straight awake tree is also very suitable as a solitary or for planting a group of trees. Young column cyphers can even be cultivated in pots, decorating balconies, terraces and doorways. However, since the trees are very vigorous, they should be planted in the garden after a few years.

Winter cypress trees overwinter

In fact, it is considered optimal to keep young Mediterranean cypresses in pots. These are often not sufficiently hardy and should therefore be kept in a cool, but frost-free place. As soon as the trees get older, they are no longer too sensitive and can be put directly into the garden without any problems. In winter, however, all Säilenzypressen need a good winter protection, for example by means of a cover by garden fleece or similar material. It is important that this is breathable and allows an exchange of air - under plastic or the like, the plants tend quickly to fungal infections and thus rot.

Tips

If the column cypress gets brown spots, then there is usually a lack of water behind it. In winter, a sufficient water supply is particularly important.
