Column cutting raspberry - what should be considered?
In the plant specialist trade so-called pillar raspberries are offered again and again. However, in contrast to many other pillared fruit varieties, raspberries have a special peculiarity regarding their growth and fruit yield in terms of cut and care.

A column pear or a columnar cherry grows to a certain extent despite their growth-type rather stunted form of growth and even with regular pruning with time get an ever thicker stem and a strong rhizome. Raspberries follow a fundamentally different pattern with their growth, since they renew themselves with the growth of new rods right next to the old rods at the latest every two years in their entire plant mass. So if so-called "pillar-raspberries" are offered in the plant trade, one can not rely on a stable pillar form without special care measures. In most cases, the further maintenance of a columnar shape is facilitated by a corresponding climbing trellis. Newly grown rods must nevertheless be directed and fixed in a columnar shape, while old rods die and have to be removed.

Although there are differences between the growth parameters of different types of raspberry, in principle, almost all raspberries can be brought into a columnar shape by cutting and targeted binding. For this purpose, the newly-grown rods are easily attached to a climbing aid with binding wire, binding brush or special holding clips and laterally or upwardly proliferating shoots are cut with a sharp secateurs. This process must be repeated up to twice a year.

In order to grow a particularly impressive raspberry column, it is also possible to combine different kinds of raspberry (for example with different colored fruits). In addition to the one-year and two-year-old wood varieties, the trade now also stocks raspberry varieties that allow two harvests per year. The biennial rods can then be removed after the first harvest, so the one-year-old rods get even more light until the second harvest of the year.
