Wood rosemary - What to do?
Rosemary is a subshrub, the older shoots first lignified and then verkahlen. Regular pruning is essential so that your beautiful plant does not become unsightly and unproductive with age. However, you can also make use of the rosemary lumber and raise a high stems.
Cut rosemary regularly
Frost-sensitive herbs such as rosemary should be brought into shape with a radical cut in spring if possible. On the one hand, however, you should be careful not to cut off the fresh, soft shoots - the older ones from the previous year must be removed. Therefore, the right time for a cut is even before the new shoots cast out. On the other hand, this time is not always respected, because you better not cut in yet announced night frosts. There is a very strong reason for this: every rosemary has replacement buds that sprout out should freeze the first tender shoot tips in a late frost. These replacement buds cut off at too early a cut and the plant can not drive out. In the course of the year, you will trim the rosemary as evenly as possible during the harvest.
Educate a rosemary baby
For a home-grown rosemary you need an older, woody rosemary. Cut away all woody branches except for a single, upright, and other side shoots. Only in the upper crown area now some branches remain, which must be trimmed in a pleasing crown shape. Do not cut into the lignified parts, but leave a few centimeters of green wood - rosemary, like so many shrubs, does not grow out of old wood. As a further care measure, you should regularly spin off the new shoots, so that they branch out nicely and grow together to form a bushy crown. The best time for such an upbringing is the late spring or the early summer, when the herb is in the "juice". The timing is beneficial in that the shrub will grow faster. In addition, the cuts heal faster.
Tips & Tricks
If possible, not only harvest individual needles or small twigs, but also whole branches. What you do not consume immediately can be preserved in various ways.
