Sow rosemary in the cold frame
Due to its intense aroma, rosemary is one of the most popular culinary herbs and can be used very versatile in both the kitchen and naturopathy. Usually, the Mediterranean shrub is propagated over cuttings, which usually succeeds without complications. Propagation by sowing, however, is difficult.
Rosemary is a light germ
The fine rosemary seeds should be applied from mid-March under glass or from mid to late April in the cold frame. Since, like so many herbs, rosemary is a light germ, the seeds should only be covered very thinly with soil or merely pressed on. The germination time is about three to five weeks. You can proceed as follows during sowing:
Germination can be induced by the use of gibberellic acid, a plant growth hormone.
Seeds germinate very unevenly
Rosemary seeds germinate very irregularly, you may need to be patient. The plantlets are piked in individual pots as soon as the first true leaflets grow after the two cotyledons. However, a planting should take place only in the following year, because the young plants are still very sensitive in the first year and also can not overwinter outside. They would most likely freeze to death. The plants are placed from mid to late May - ergo after the Eisheiligen - at a distance of about 30 x 40 centimeters in the bed.
Tips & Tricks
Young plants should be evenly moist - but never wet! - are kept until they have reliably struck roots and grown well. Fertilization is not necessary.
