Delphinium can overwinter in the open air
The popular and cultivated in cottage gardens for many centuries perennial (also known as Delphinium) is absolutely hardy even in harsh climates and needs no special winter protection.
Cut back larkspur in autumn
As a preparation for the winter, cut the faded larkspur in autumn until just above the ground and then thoroughly mulch the root area with ripe, humus-like compost. This measure should actually be sufficient as a preparatory measure for the winter, because - if it concerns a perennial variety - the larkspur will drive out again in the spring. Only for one- or two-year Delphinium varieties, you should leave the inflorescences so that the plant can form seeds and sow themselves again.
Larkspur overwinter in the pot
Lots of people prefer to keep spears in their pots, because the tender green is a popular snail feed - and even a few snail invasions have ensured that no stately shrubs could grow from the first tender sprouts. Larkspur in the pot also does not need to be specially protected, you only need to wrap the pot in very frosty temperatures with a warming mat or similar. Otherwise, a protected outdoor stand is sufficient, at best on a house wall.
Tips & Tricks
For buckets especially the lower varieties Delphinium belladonna are suitable, which remain significantly smaller than for example the Elatum perennials.
