What is powdery mildew?
Powdery mildew is caused by a fungus called "fair-weather mushroom", as it is favored by heat, drought and strong sunlight. An infestation can be recognized by the white, flour-like deposit on leaf tops and bottoms, shoots and flowers. The affected tissue is darkened and eventually dies.
Prevent powdery mildew and fight it
If you do not want to inject with fungicides, biological measures sometimes help. However, since prevention is better than treatment, you can inject it preventively against mildew. Sude from field horsetail, sage or yarrow have proved their worth.
Spraying with field horsetail
Collect a handful of field horsetail in the summer and soak the herb in rainwater for a day. The ratio should be about 1.5 kilograms of field horsetail per 10 liters of water. Then boil for an hour, after which the broth is diluted 1: 5. The broth acts not only preventively against mildew, but also against rust, brown rot (in tomatoes) and other fungal diseases.
Tips & Tricks
Especially yarrow has been used since ancient times to protect plants from fungal diseases. For this, boil 500 grams of flowers in 10 liters of rainwater and then leave the broth for three days.
