How often should you water the lawn?
Especially in early summer and in the summer months, lawns rely on a regular water supply to stay fresh green and healthy. The reason for this is the short roots of the grasses, which can not get the needed moisture from the depths of the soil in dryness.
How much water does the lawn need?
Considering that a lawn needs on average about 2.5 liters of water per day and square meter, it is clear that the summer rains are usually insufficient for adequate care. However, it is not possible to specify what the actual water requirement is. This is - like so many others - very individual and dependent on various factors. If possible, do not water daily in small quantities
Part of the proper lawn care is to water the lawn only once or twice a week, but to penetrate it thoroughly. Do not make the mistake of watering the surface every day, but not enough: the amount of water is insufficient to reach deeper soil layers. Instead, the moisture remains at or just below the surface, which on the one hand promotes the entanglement of the lawn - and on the other hand ensures that the roots also form only just below the surface and therefore dependent on a continued frequent water supply. If you let the water fail for a few days (perhaps because you are on a trip), then the blades of grass dry up fast. Therefore, better train your lawn into a weekly pouring unit, where you can administer the weekly requirement.
Watering the lawn - That's right
Each week, a lawn needs between 20 and 25 liters of water per square meter, which should penetrate about ten inches deep into the ground. After watering, you can prick some samples from the lawn and check: If the upper one to two centimeters are relatively dry, but the soil is moist below, you've done everything right. If it is the other way around, the amount of water used is insufficient or you have resorted to the garden hose at the wrong time.
Tips
Install a rain gauge or other suitable vessel in the middle of the lawn. If it has filled up to about two centimeters with water, you have reached the required casting volume.
