Cover lawn after sowing

To germinate a newly seeded lawn more quickly, cover it with transparent foil. It protects against dehydration and warms the soil. Due to the higher temperatures, the grass seeds germinate earlier.

Why cover the grass seed?

Covering the grass seed after sowing has some advantages:

Use transparent growth foil

If you want to protect the new lawn with a cover, use special growth foils. They are available in the garden trade. Alternatively, you can also take transparent plastic film.

Sow the grass seed evenly and evenly sprinkle the soil evenly with a gently set lawn sprinkler.

Only when the surface is well moistened but not completely soaked, the cover sheet is stretched over the lawn and attached to the sides with stones or earth. The foil must not lie flat on the ground, so that the plants have some space to grow underneath.

Greenhouse climate under the cover

Under the film, a true greenhouse climate develops through the sun. The surface does not dry out in wind and strong sunlight, but remains evenly moist. As a result, the grass seeds germinate very quickly.

With a cover, you do not need to worry about sudden heavy rain. The seed can not be washed away under the foil, so that no large gaps or can develop.

The newly created lawn is also protected, because it is immediately apparent that something has been sown here. The area will not be accidentally entered. Birds pecking for grains have no chance because they do not reach the seeds through the cover.

Remove the cover

Once the first roots of the turf plants are anchored in the ground, the tarpaulin is removed so that the lawn gets enough air.

Tips & Tricks

If you want to renew an old lawn that is riddled with weeds, cover it with an opaque tarp. This includes not only the grass plants, but also the weeds. The film should be left for a long time.
