Growing radish is one of the simplest gardening activities. Sown today and four weeks later harvest fresh on the bread or in the salad. Radish farming lives up to its promise - always a successful harvest. Assuming you follow a few rules.
Radish is always time - from March to September
If you start growing radishes in early March, you will start harvesting the first tender tubers at the beginning of spring. Because depending on the variety, they only need 30 days of ripening. Due to their short culture period of four to eight weeks, they can be planned as a pre- or postculture of other vegetables.
Radishes are allowed to be re-cultivated at the earliest three years later at the same location. If the crop rotation is not maintained, diseases and pest infestation occur more frequently.
Prepare seedbed and grow radish
Radishes love bright, partially shaded places. Either in the garden bed, balcony box or planter. In a mixture of normal garden soil or potting soil with compost and some sand radishes flourish well. You should not sow them as neighbors of melons or cucumbers. These deplete the tubers too much water.
Radish seed is done in rows. Keep a row distance of about 10 centimeters and when sowing about 4 centimeters. Otherwise, the radish plants have to be painstakingly piked at a later time. Radishes are thirsty! Keep evenly moist during the growth phase. But avoid waterlogging!
Harvest radishes and enjoy
Radishes are simply pulled out of the ground by their leaves. They taste best fresh on the table, in a salad or as a sandwich. Wrapped in a damp cloth, the tubers can be stored in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 days without herb.
Tasty radishes can be easily grown in window boxes or in the bed. The red tubers need little care and mature so quickly that they are ideal for beginners or a children's bed. It's a pleasure to see them grow and harvest the fruits of their labor in just 4 weeks.
Radish pests and diseases
From mid-May danger threatens from above by the cabbage fly and the cabbage white. A net over the radish bed protects the seed. From below, earth fleas settle in the dry soil. These can be held by constant soil moisture.
Radishes infested with radish veiling fungus are to be removed immediately. Their rapid growth spares radishes from many pests and diseases. Before larvae, viruses or germs develop, the tubers are harvested and consumed.
