The short-lived morning glory is usually cultivated in Central Europe as a one-year climbing plant in the garden or in pots on the balcony. If some advice is given during sowing, the colorful flower funnels of the originally Mexican climbers soon show up without too much care.

Properties of the seeds

In the relatively small seeds of the morning glory, one gram of seed contains about 35 to 45 seeds. Since there are an almost unmanageable number of color variants, also in the specialized trade several subspecies with for example blue, pink or white flower funnels are available. The following properties must be observed when sowing:

It facilitates germination by allowing the seeds to swell in water for a few hours before sowing. In addition, you can save a lot of time and effort on piking by sowing 3 to 4 seeds each directly at the planned location or each in a separate pot.

Prefer mooring winds in the house

Morning glory are very alert creepers, but they can not be sown and planted in front of the icy saint because of their sensitivity to cold temperatures. If you prefer the young plants on the windowsill, you gain a head start on growth in the spring when you are on the balcony or in the garden. An optimal timing for planting in the garden is when you sow the seeds in the house between late March and early April.

The direct sowing of the morning glory in the field

From the end of May, you can also sow the morning glories directly in the field. When choosing your location, take care to keep it as sunny as possible, with some protection against wind and rain. If pets and toddlers play in your garden, they should not get near the sometimes poisonous subspecies of the Morning Glory. This problem can be solved by sowing the morning glory in unattainable height for children and small animals in hanging planters or balcony boxes.
