The Prachtscharte: hardy in the field?
The so-called Eärige Prachtscharte (Liatris spicata) originally comes from the wide, sun-drenched plains of North American grasslands and impresses with their up to 1 meter high towering flowers. The horstbildenden plants are in the perennial flowerbed an easy-care visual enrichment, as they seem like a striking flowering grass.
The wintering of the Prachtscharte in the field
The Prachtscharte is a perennial shrub whose wintering organ is completely below the earth's surface with its rhizome-like root system. The aboveground plant parts die each year and the plant drives easily in layers with two-digit minus degrees in the spring again from new. A special winter protection is sometimes appropriate only for the cultivated in the tub specimens of the Prachtscharte because their roots are exposed to the winter cold directly as plants in the bed. In the case of bucket specimens of the Prachtscharte, the following precautions will help in winter:
A timely unpacking in the spring is important so that it does not come to mold after sunny spring days.
In winter, do not let the splendor boil thirst or drown
The roots of the Prachtscharte should never completely dry out even in winter, therefore, an economical watering is advisable when it comes in the winter in the long term to strong minus degrees without snowfall (bald frosts). On the other hand, beauty splits but also tolerate waterlogging in the underground only badly, as this can promote rot symptoms at the roots. Therefore, in plants in the bed and in the tub should always be paid to a suitable plant substrate. Heavy and loamy soil should be loosened up by the addition of sand, gravel or compost soil already during the planting of the finch.
The pruning of the Prachtscharte before the winter
Since the aboveground plant parts of the Prachtscharte perish anyway each winter, a pruning of the plant in the outdoor bed in the course of autumnal plant care is not necessary. However, you can cut back withered plant parts at any time to a height of 5 or 10 centimeters above the ground, if you feel visually disturbed in the perennial plant bed.
Tips
In order for the Prachtscharte to be able to adjust in time for the approaching winter in autumn, you should no longer fertilize the plant from August.
