Leek is a delicious and healthy onion vegetable that can be used in the kitchen versatile. The cultivation in your own garden requires a bit of tact and patience. With the right care, even beginners will get good crops.

Leek is undemanding. In a sunny, slightly sheltered location, he feels comfortable.
How should the soil be?
Leek is a starvation and needs a lot of nutrients. The soil is deeply dug up and improved with compost or manure. If the ground is too heavy, mix some sand.
Is leek preferred or sown outdoors?
The summer is sprouted from January in the greenhouse and later out in the field. Winterporree is sown directly in the field in July. For an early harvest you can sow under glass of leek from June.
Does leek need to be transplanted?
Yes, leeks are transplanted as soon as the plants have reached a height of 15 centimeters. They are inserted as deep as possible into the ground, so that long white shafts develop.
Which row and planting distance is to be observed?
The distance between the rows should be at least 30 centimeters. As planting distance in the row are 10 centimeters optimal.
How is leek poured?
Leeks need a lot of water. However, waterlogging must be avoided at all costs. Apply so much water in the morning and in the evening that the soil is well moistened.
Does leek need to be fertilized?
As a heavy drinker, leeks need additional fertilizer every month. Well suited are nettle jellies or a nitrogen fertilizer for vegetables.
When is leek harvested?
You can harvest leeks five to six months after sowing. Summer freeze is harvested from August / September. Winterporree is allowed to stay in the bed until December. Once inflorescences grow, leeks are inedible.
Is leeks suitable as a mixed culture?
Leek harmonises wonderfully with carrots, lettuce or cucumbers.
Which plants does not tolerate leeks?
Other bulbous plants and beetroot should never be planted on the same bed as leek.
Which pests and diseases can occur?
The cultivation of leeks can cause various diseases and pests that make the leeks inedible. This includes:
Nets over the beds and regular checks keep the damage in check. The best preventive measures are a paser site, a good supply of water and sufficient nutrients.
Can leeks be multiplied?
Leeks are after a while inflorescences. The leek rods are then no longer usable. Leave the inflorescences on the plant to harvest seeds. If they are cut off, the plant forms small onions that can be transplanted into the bed.
