Physalis proliferate over cuttings
Physalis, the orange-red, about cherry-sized fruits of the Andean berry, enjoy thanks to their fairly simple cultivation at many hobby gardeners growing popularity. Usually, the approximately one meter high, in our latitudes due to the frost one year old shrubs are pulled over seeds. Little is known, however, that the Andean berry can also reproduce over cuttings.
Advantages of cuttings propagation
It can score the cuttings multiplication in comparison with the seed production with some great advantages. The heat-loving physalis must be preferred here in Germany from February, at the latest in March, so that the diligent gardener can enjoy the short harvest season in September. German summer is simply too short for the exotic plant to produce fruit in time and to let it ripen. By propagating with cuttings, you can already save an important step (the cultivation of seeds) and thus can go to harvest faster.

Physalis cuttings overwinter
It is often stated that physalis (in this case, Andean berries) are annual plants. This information, although not entirely wrong, is not correct. In their homeland, physalis are perennial shrubs up to two meters high. With us they are kept only one year, because they are not hardy and therefore freeze in the open air. However, you can keep the sturdy plants in a sufficiently large bucket and overwinter them brightly and frost-free. However, the wintering place should not be too warm, optimally about 10 to 12 ° C. Too dark wintered physalis vergeilen, d. H. they develop so-called light impulses. However, these are not fruit bearing, which is why you should again in the spring of these plants remove suitable cuttings and plant.
Tips & Tricks
Green harvested Andean berries do not ripen. However, you can still leave unripe fruits on the bush and bring them to winter quarters. They are still ripe in winter at lower temperatures.
