Plum mown in the garden: occurrence, prevention and control
This pest is also known as plum moth. He feels well in plums, plums or mirabelles. With heavy infestation by this pest the harvest is in danger. We explain the background and methods of control.
Key data
The plum mound is known as the plum wrapper. In spring, the female moths lay their eggs on the small fruits. Each plum is positioned one piece at a time. The second generation repeats this process between July and August.
As soon as the maggot hatches, it nestles inside the fruit. The pulp serves as a sweet nutritional base of the pest.
Recognize
One can see an infestation through boring of the fruit peel. The immature plums quickly turn purple. Shortly after they fall to the ground.
To treat
As soon as you notice a pest infestation, remove all fruits with holes. These include fallen as well as still hanging copies. In this way you prevent the spread of the second generation. The household waste is to be preferred.
Note:
Infested fruit must not be disposed of on the compost. There is a danger of a progressive spread and transmission to other trees.
In addition, the specialized trade offers special maggots traps. These are based on a natural principle and are free of toxins. Using sexual attractants male moths get lost on the sticky surfaces. In this way, there is a local eradication of this. The traps are hanging directly in the trees. There are no insecticides against plum maggots.
Prevent
Alternatively, the installation of bird boxes on plum trees is recommended. Songbirds are among the natural predators of the plum-making.
Tip:
Remove the fruit mummies. In these the maggots overwinter.
The plum moths lay their eggs near the plum tree. Corrugated board can be placed around the tree trunk for this purpose. Filed maggots are to be disposed of with household waste. Only use this method in dry weather. After rain, the cardboard is to renew.

Strong plum trees protect themselves from pests and diseases. A paser site is the best prerequisite for healthy growth.
