Permanently removing lilac - Why removing the root is so important
Lilac, as beautiful as it is blooming, is quite a weed and very difficult to kill. If you want to clear an old lilac tree, it is not enough just to saw off the trunk near the ground. Instead, you must also clear the roots - and as thoroughly as possible, so there is no offspring.

Many varieties of lilac, especially Syringa vulgaris and their hybrids, develop innumerable root shoots, from which the plant emerges again and again - even if the main stem has long been removed. Instead, now appear in its (former) perimeter hundreds of root shoots, with which the plant wants to fight their own death. Many a gardener tries to defeat them with weed killers like Roundup. However, it is better not to put such a poison in your garden as it will affect all other plants and living things there - as well as the soil and groundwater. Not to mention that poisoning often does not kill the lilac. Instead, he still drives out again and again.

Tips
Sometimes it is advised to simply burn out stumps and their roots. We would also advise against this since the smoldering fire ignited can not be controlled reliably. It is better, however, to mill out the rhizome.
