Papyrus proliferates well over division

Can I multiply my papyrus myself?

For an experienced gardener, the increase of papyrus is certainly not a problem, but you as a beginner should be able to master this challenge well. The only requirement is that you have a healthy and strong papyrus plant.

So multiply your papyrus by division

The root ball of a papyrus plant consists of so-called rhizomes. These Wurzelausläufer spread very well and quite quickly. Any injury to the roots can easily take away plants with rhizomes and virtually repair them yourself. Thus, these plants, just like the papyrus, share very well.

It's best to start planting or transplanting in the spring to share your papyrus. Cut the root ball with a sharp knife in two or more parts, loosen the bale a little with your fingers and plant the individual parts again. Do not forget to water the plants well.

To pull papyrus from offshoots

The pulling of offshoots is quite easy with the papyrus. However, it will take longer for you to get handsome plants that way. Cut some stalks from a healthy vigorous plant about 5 cm below the leaf. Plant these cuttings about 2 to 3 cm deep into a growing pot with a rather lean substrate. Pour the offshoots and sprinkle with lime-free water.

During growth, the offshoots need a humid-warm climate. If you do not have a mini-greenhouse for your offshoots, then put a transparent plastic bag (for example a freezer bag) over the seed pot. Now you should regularly sprinkle the offshoots with lukewarm, low-lime water or even with rainwater. Ventilate your cuttings daily to prevent the formation of mold.

Tips

For the rapid propagation it is recommended to divide already existing plants. Thanks to its rhizomes, the papyrus grows very fast and you have pretty beautiful plants after a short time.
