Hibernate the palm trees properly - a little guide
Hibernating the southern beauties in such a way that they do not suffer any damage can be a challenge especially for temperature-sensitive specimens. We'll explain you how to best practice the winter.
Early hardy palm trees - southern beauties defying the frostPreparing for the winter
In order to keep the plant well over the cold season, you should stop fertilizing in late summer or early autumn. Check already for pests such as spider mites or aphids and treat the Mediterranean beauty accordingly.
Entrance into the house
As soon as frost threatens, the palm plant is cleared into the house.
Optimal places for hibernation are:
Important is the even temperature because the palm fronds in case of fluctuations evaporate moisture immediately and the metabolism of the palm completely out of kilter.
Care in winter
After wintering, the plants are watered only very sparsely. The rule of thumb here is that the cooler and the darker it is in winter quarters, the less water the plant needs. Casting is only possible if the upper centimeters of the substrate feel very dry, fertilising is not possible at all.
Pack the palm and leave it outdoors
Very large specimens can be hibernated in a well-protected place on the balcony or the terrace. Suitable for this are plant fleeces in which you carefully pack the palm. Alternatively, the trade leads special palm houses, which are ideal for hibernation.
Tips
Winter hardy outdoor palms, which defy even low minus temperatures, still need sufficient winter protection. Spread a thick mulch layer of leaves and brushwood near the roots. In addition, packing in a suitable plant fleece is recommended.
