Grow oregano in the garden

The oregano, originally native to the Mediterranean, is exceptionally popular as a spice herb also north of the Alps. The plant is very easy to care for and the cultivation succeeds in the garden as well as on the balcony without problems.

The oregano loves a sunny location

In its homeland, the oregano grows in full sun as a dense carpet. Therefore, give the sun-hungry herb a sunny and warm place in your home garden. He makes himself very well in a herbal spiral and adorns each herbal bed with its beautiful lip blooms, which are swarmed by bees.

The suitable substrate

The oregano is an undemanding garden herb. It thrives well in slightly lean garden soil and prefers air-permeable, dry and somewhat calcareous ground. However, on waterlogging, the plant is sensitive and then prone to rot.

Multiply oregano

Oregano, like many other herbs, is available from specialist retailers as a finished and already hardened plant. However, you can also propagate the herb yourself from seeds or cuttings and grow the preferred plantlets in the garden.

Propagation by seeds

Oregano is one of the light germs, so do not cover the small seeds with substrate. As a breeding sub-rate is suitable commercially grown or vegetable soil without fertilizer admixture. So that the small seeds do not dry out, you should cover the cultivation pot with a transparent plastic bag and moisten once a day with a fine spray mist. Separate the seedlings with a stature height of five to ten centimeters.

Propagation by cuttings

Before inserting the approximately 15 centimeters long, freshly cut cuttings, remove the lower leaves. As growing substrate is suitable for cultivation soil, normal potting soil or herbal earth. The pot does not need to be covered. Place the plantlets in a bright place and keep them evenly moist. Usually, the cuttings rooted after four to six weeks and can then be slowly acclimated to the field.

The planting distance

The oregano grows bushy and spreads flat. If you plant the herbs you should therefore give it enough space. Ideal is a planting distance of at least 25 centimeters.

Oregano can be used at any time during spring and summer. You can share large perennials on this occasion and multiply the oregano in this way.

The flowering season is the best harvest time

The aroma of oregano is most intense in the hot summer months during flowering. You can then pluck individual leaves directly from the stems or cut off whole branches together with the pretty flowers and dry them bunched in a light and dark place. By drying, the aroma of oregano intensifies and becomes even more intense.
