Various of our favorite orchids will be too warm on the windowsill in summer. If the temperatures exceed the maximum, the royal graces simply stop growing or discarding the flowers. The following orchids are better off on the balcony to brag about their flower beauty:
The popular butterfly orchid (Phalaenopsis) freezes at temperatures below 15 degrees Celsius, so that their stay on the balcony only in midsummer eligible. The same applies to the grape orchid (Dendrobium), at least for the hot house varieties, such as Dendrobium phalaenopsis and Dendrobium nobile.
Care tips for the balcony
Orchids only take their place in the open air when the risk of delayed frosts is over in the middle of May. Please choose a location that is protected from direct sunlight and pattering rain. The situation should be bright and airy, because the UV rays and light wind keep diseases at bay.
Since the coarse substrate dries faster on warm summer days, shorter pouring intervals are the rule on the balcony. Until you give the orchids in late summer, they will be spoiled every 4 weeks with a liquid special fertilizer. Sprinkle the leaves daily with lime-free water, unless the morning dew has already taken over this task.
Tips
Greedy slugs spare no effort to crawl up to the balcony. So that the pests do not attack your orchids here, simply hang the plants in a partially shaded, air-rippled area, which can be easily reached for maintenance work.
