Fruit trees water on hot summer days
The first, almost tropical summer days of this year are behind us and those who want to harvest a good crop in their own garden can not help but regularly water their plants and shrubs. Gladly, the fruit trees are "forgotten", although just in times of highest fruit weight gain an almost insatiable need. Although a moderate dryness can not harm the otherwise healthy and stable fruit trees and the aroma of the fruit is even very useful, too well-meaning watering can greatly dilute our apples, pears or cherries. However, if you do not water enough, you will soon find that its fruit trees are much more susceptible to pests and, unfortunately, to diseases.
When even rain does not use much
At the latest, when the soil is dried up to 30 cm deep, even the more vigorous trees get serious problems with continued lack of water. Even a prolonged rainfall at night will hardly contribute to a significant wetting of the fiber roots due to its low penetration into the dried out sand. Therefore, in preparation for the (hot) summer and even more in view of the approaching holiday trip to a "plan B for irrigation" of the fruit trees should be thought.
Make the fruit trees "summery"
If the drought persists for a long time, even the casting edges around the trees, which were perhaps previously laboriously put together, will not be able to do much to regulate the water balance. The often practiced watering habit of watering the trees a little bit at night, at best, promotes moisture and unwanted rooting in the upper soil layers, rather than in depth. But there is a solution, which, however, requires some preliminary work.
Mulch under tins instead of dried desert sand
The following old-established method of melioration is particularly suitable for the already somewhat older fruit trees. You will need (depending on the size of the tree):
In the first step, the soil around the tree in a correspondingly large radius 15 to 20 cm deep should be removed. Now it is refilled with wood chop, if necessary, a 5 cm high layer of mulch (the mulch we will do in the following article!) Will be added at the top. In the Speißkübel each 15 to 20 holes are drilled with a diameter of 2 to 3 mm. Thereafter, both containers are placed parallel to each other and with the tree in the middle. Now the containers can be filled with water, if possible from the rain barrel. After 15 to 30 minutes, you will notice that all two vessels are empty, with the entire amount of water evenly distributed over the entire root area.
