Evening primrose: Direct sowing in the summer
The evening primrose (Oenothera) is a versatile perennial for colorful perennial beds and borders. The cheerful flowers adorn but also near-natural planted perennial meadows and sunny pebble and rock gardens. The propagation of the popular summer flower via a sowing of purchased or self-collected seeds.
The right time
When the right time for sowing has come, depends on the type. Usually the direct sowing in the garden bed takes place between June to August, although the young plants can also be brought forward on the domestic windowsill from March. If you already have evening primrose in the garden and you do not want to plant new ones specifically to another location, you can simply sow the plants yourself and save a bit of work.
Flowering only in the second year
However, whether you prefer the young plants or sow directly into the garden, the evening primrose will not bloom until the second year. In the first year, only a low leaf rosette develops, the actual height growth and thus the flowering takes place only in the following year.
Pre-culture and direct sowing
For a preculture, place the seeds in pots of potting soil starting in March and keep them slightly moist. The grown young plants can be transplanted from mid to late May into the open or in pots. The direct sowing takes place as described:

Overwinter evening primrose
Since evening primroses are generally regarded as very hardy, the young plants can be left outside without worry. Be careful, however, that you do not plant the perennials in locations that are wet in winter - winter wetness is very difficult to tolerate by evening primrose. A strong cut in autumn or towards the end of winter stimulates early flowering.
Tips
There is a whole range of modern hybrid varieties (including "African Sun", "Camel" or "Firework"), which can not be propagated by seeding alone sorted. In this case, however, an increase by semi-mature cuttings in the early summer is possible.
