Sternmoos - the easy-care, evergreen lawn replacement
Many a gardener is annoyed when the lawn is almost entirely made of moss. So why not put moss as an alternative to conventional turf? This is even possible without problems when star moss is planted. So you provide an evergreen lawn replacement.
The mastiff Sternmoos
Sternmoos is not really a moss, but a masta from the carnation family. The very low groundcover forms dense cushions, which are littered from June to August with countless small white star-shaped blossoms.
The upholstery is not higher than five inches and is therefore ideal as lawn replacement. It is evergreen and tolerates minus temperatures down to minus 35 degrees.
The tender star moss can hardly prevail against competitors. So that the area is not overgrown by other plants, it is worthwhile to surround them with grass edge stones.
Plant starwort as a lawn substitute
Although star moss grows in direct sunshine, there is a risk that the delicate plant will dry out too quickly. So that the ground cover can unfold its full bloom splendor, the soil must always be a little damp.
The planting can be done at any time as long as the soil is not frozen. Only in midsummer the installation of the spare lawn is not recommended. The intended area must be carefully cleared of weeds. Too light soils are improved with mature compost.
15 plants are needed per square meter. You can also sow them yourself.
Maintain star moss lawn properly
The soil must never completely dry out, whereby waterlogging must be avoided at all costs. Occasional fertilizers are recommended.
Mowing is not necessary as the groundcover remains very low. Should a perennial become a bit taller, it can easily be cut with a pruner. As a result, the plants branch out even better. However, the cutting prevents a lush flowering.
Sternmoos is hardy. The area should be cleared of leaves before winter. Under the mulch forms too much moisture, which makes the upholstery lazy.
Tips & Tricks
Star moss tends to stand out from the ground after a few weeks. It should then simply be pushed back to earth. This can also be achieved by frequent entry. Therefore, this ground cover is an ideal lawn replacement.
