Refine a melon yourself
Over the past few years, more and more refined plants from the annual vegetable sector have been available to gardeners. With a little skill and patience, you can refine your melon yourself.

You typically need at least the following things for finishing a melon:
You can pull the fig leaf pumpkin like your melon plant out of seeds. If you calculate the germination period and the required growth time up to the fertile size, you should plan in total about three to four weeks. To select the healthiest and strongest plantlets, you should always sow a few more seeds than you need to plant.
The process of finishing melons
Put the two plants close together in a saucepan so that the stems are almost touching above the ground. It is even easier and gentler on the roots if you sow the seeds together in one pot. However, you must sow the fig leaf gourds about five days after the melons, as they germinate and grow faster than these. Then, with the melon, make an oblique cut from bottom to top about five centimeters below the cotyledons to the middle of the stalk, with the pumpkin make a corresponding cut from above diagonally downwards. In this so-called Ablaktion with back tongue then insert both tongues into each other and fix them with a tape. As a support while growing together, a small wooden rod is often inserted as a holder in the pot.
The process after finishing
After gardening, some gardeners leave both roots on the plant and only cut the upper part of the fig leaf gourd. However, its root is not just intended as an additional water and nutrient supply. Once the upper part of the pumpkin plant has been capped after a few days and this wound has healed well, the original root of the melon should also be cut off. This is less resistant to various root diseases and should therefore be separated as a gateway for these.
Tips & Tricks
After being brought forward in the house and immediately after refining, pumpkin and melon plants are relatively sensitive. They should therefore be gradually acclimated to the bright sunlight before planting in the garden.
