Where does the mango come from?
Already more than 4,000 years ago, mango was cultivated in India, where it has developed into a national fruit. Meanwhile, the mango has spread in the tropical and subtropical area and is even grown in southern Europe.
Where does the mango come from in the supermarket?
The mango is grown mainly in tropical and subtropical areas. The main growing areas are large parts of Asia, Central and South America, Africa, the Caribbean, Israel and Australia. However, mangoes are also grown in Europe, for example in Spain, more precisely in the Canary Islands. About 75 percent of world production of mangoes comes from Asia.

Are there different types of mangoes?
There are many different types of mangoes, both wild and cultivated. They differ not only in shape and color but also significantly in size and taste.
Most of the cultivation regions have their own preferred mango species. Indian mangoes are usually pretty yellow, sometimes with a red glow or reddish spots. The Philippine mangoes, on the other hand, remain green, even when they are ripe. Deep red solid mangoes are believed to come from Brazil, they are still immature, even if they do not look that way.
Use of the mango
Mangoes are great for raw consumption. They can thus be processed well in an exotic fruit salad. However, only ripe mangos taste really good. Ripe mangoes are easily pressed in with a finger and smell very aromatic. Often they have small dark spots on the shell.
Mangoes can also be processed very well to chutneys, jam or compote. In India, they are part of many different dishes and the kitchen is indispensable. Refine a sauce or a curry with it. The fine acid harmonizes perfectly with a slight sharpness.

Buy only ripe mangoes, otherwise the sensitive mango could rot before it ripens sufficiently.
