Magnolias do not produce new seed levels every year, and some proud owners have never even seen mature magnolia seeds - even though the magnolia is 25 years old. Seed extraction from the fruit
After flowering, many magnolias produce a fruit that does not always contain seeds. The so-called Balgfrucht encloses the - not edible - pulp with the seed pods and bursts when the seeds are ripe. Precisely fitting this time is immensely important: after all, multiplication only succeeds when the seeds are fully ripe. Harvest the seed kernels from the cracked capsules and carefully remove the adherent red casing and the surrounding flesh. Both can later lead to unwanted decay processes. The actual seeds of magnolia are black. Flesh and skin are easier to remove if you soak the seeds in a little warm water.
Grow magnolias from the seeds
However, the newly obtained seeds can not be planted immediately, because the magnolia is a frost germ. This means you must first keep the seeds cool for several months before you can sow them the following spring. This method is called stratification in the terminology and works as follows:
