Magnolia: Small varieties for balcony and garden

A magnificent magnolia wishes many a passionate gardener in his possession. But what if the garden is small or you only have a balcony? In this case, you can manage with rather small-sized magnolia varieties.

Star magnolias remain comparatively small

Magnolia is not the same as magnolia, because some species grow rather as a tree and reach heights of six meters and more - and become almost as wide with age. In particular, the popular tulip magnolia is very high, as well as the Kobus magnolia and some varieties of purple magnolia. At the same time, however, magnolia grows very slowly, so that such heights are probably only expected in 15 to 20 years for a newly purchased seedling. An exception, however, are the ever very small star magnolias (Magnolia stellata), which, according to variety, reach maximum heights between 1.5 to 3 meters. Thus, this species is also suitable for a position in the bucket.

Remaining small varieties of magnolia

In the overview below you will find some of the most beautiful and popular small-sized magnolia varieties. Some magnolias (especially the tulip magnolias) still reach heights of four to five meters, but nevertheless appear in this table due to their comparatively narrow to columnar growth. They are also more suitable for small gardens.

Tips & Tricks

With regard to the expected size, however, especially in refined magnolias and new varieties is required. The refining is usually done on the very large Kobus magnolia, which is why the actual height can not be predicted for the refining. Due to the still lacking empirical values, this also applies to the new varieties under the magnolias, whereby you can orientate yourself here on the parent varieties.
