Magnolia fertilize only slightly
In principle, magnolias are quite easy to care for, provided they are in the right place and in the right soil. Regular fertilization is only necessary if deficiency symptoms are noticeable.
The right soil for magnolias
Magnolias can be real divas: if they do not feel well, they show it very clearly and simply refuse the desired flowering. In order to give your magnolia no reason for such kidding, it is best to ensure optimum conditions already during planting. In addition to the right location, this requires a humus-rich, slightly acidic soil. Sandy soils are unsuitable for magnolia, whereas you should enrich loamy soil with plenty of rhododendron earth before planting.
Obtained acidic soil
If your magnolia has been in acid soil for some years but is sickly, these two causes are the most important: Acid soils usually contain very little magnesium, which has also been used up after a certain period of use. In this case, fertilize your magnolia with a fertilizer containing magnesium. Make sure, however, that most commercially available fertilizers contain little or no of this mineral. Applying an Epsom salt solution can help, however, and you can use it preventively. Furthermore, a formerly acidic soil can change its pH unnoticed. In this case, the generous distribution of peat soil in the root area helps.
For healthy magnolias ripe compost is sufficient
Healthy magnolias are supplied with a thick layer of mature (ie well rotted) compost both in spring and autumn. When working in the root area, be careful not to work too deep due to the shallow roots. The autumn composting is to help your magnolia tree to survive the winter easier. Other fertilizers (such as ready-made or liquid fertilizers) are not necessary for magnolia grown in the garden. Pot magnolia, on the other hand, require regular fertilization about every two weeks with a good liquid fertilizer. Optimal here is a rhododendron or peat soil fertilizer.

But do not go wrong if you provide your ailing magnolia with rhododendron or peat soil fertilizer. It has been specially developed to meet the needs of plants on acid soils.
Tips & Tricks
Magnolias have no particularly high nutrient requirement and are therefore endangered by a possible over-fertilization. If you pay close attention to the leaf color as well as the flowering behavior of your magnolia tree, then you can quickly compensate for existing nutrient requirements.
