Plant a lychee - How to grow a beautiful lychee

Exotic fruits such as lychees can be found here in any well-stocked supermarket. From their cores you can often grow beautiful plants that can thrive well in Germany if properly cared for. Lychees and other exotic plants are wonderful indoor plants for lovers of unusual plants that not everyone has.

Selection and preparation of the seed kernel

Lychees are commercially available in the months between November and March and in the summer months of July and August. If you would like to grow small trees from the seeds of the purchased fruits, then you should put this project into the summer months if possible - then the weather is ideal for the litchis from the subtropics. Choose the most ripe fruit for semen production. The degree of ripeness of a lychee is indicated by the color of the peel, which should be as dark as possible. If in doubt, you can let the selected fruits ripen for a few days. But do not put them in the fridge, because they do not tolerate lychee very well.

This is how to prepare a lychee

Once that's done, you can plant your lychee.

Plant a lychee properly

Take a small plant pots with drainage holes at the bottom, so that excess water can drain off. Litchi plants do not tolerate waterlogging. The substrate is best a mixture of seed soil with a little coarse sand - the lychee likes it airy and easy. Insert the core about one to two centimeters deep into the ground and cover it loosely. The core should be on the side. Place the plant pot in a light and warm location, but not in the blazing sun. Keep the substrate moist but not wet. It is best to use a spray bottle to moisten the soil. Within about 30 days, the lychee will germinate. Once the small plant has developed three to four leaves, it can move into a larger pot. Water them regularly, but save with fertilizer.

Tips & Tricks

Too much fertilizer harms your litchi pigtail. Lychees are very slow-growing trees, which therefore require few nutrients. Fertilize with liquid fertilizer every four to six weeks, but do not use more than a quarter of the specified amount.
