When can you transplant privates?
If the privet bothers at its previous location or if the location is unfavorable, so that the shrub does not grow well, many gardeners think about transplanting. That's easier said than done. You have to expect a lot of work if you want to transplant privet, at least if the shrub or hedge is older.
When should you transplant privet?
Whether you really want to transplant a privet, you should think twice. Although the shrub is a flat root, it forms a very dense root system, which can be difficult to get out of the ground.
Only younger privates can be easily transplanted, as the roots are not yet so pronounced here.
For older hedges, the effort is usually not worthwhile. It is easier if you plant a new hedge at the desired location. The young plants are very cheap and can also be easily pulled yourself.
The best time to transplant privet
In order to move a privet, the spring but also the early autumn is well suited. Then the soil is usually well moist and there is enough time for the plant to form new roots.
Basically, you can transplant the sturdy shrub at any time except in winter, as long as you then water enough.
Excavate privet and implement
Cut back the privet before excavating. Use the digging fork to pry around the shrub about one meter into the ground to loosen it. Do not damage as many roots as when digging with the spade.
Prick under the roots with the fork and raise the soil over and over again to remove the root ball from the soil.
Create a new planting hole about twice the size of the root ball. Insert the privet as straight as possible, pinch the ground and pour it well.
Tips
If the privet disappears completely from the garden, you must ensure that you get the roots completely from the soil. The shrub also drives out of small root pieces again.
