Set and care for crocus bulbs correctly
Crocus onions are robust and easy to clean. The absolutely hardy tubers drive out every year to new - without you have to do much for it. What you need to know to plant and care for crocus onions.
The size of the tuber depends on the size of the plant
Crocus onions are reminiscent of the onion in their shape. Just like this one, the upper end, from which later leaves and flowers drift, is tapering.
The size of the onion indicates how big the later plant will be. The bigger the tuber, the bigger the flowers.
Unpack crocus onions immediately after purchase and plant
Crocus bulbs do not tolerate long storage. If you buy crocuses for the garden, you should unpack them immediately and bring them to the ground within the next three days. Keep the poisonous tubers out of reach of pets, especially rabbits.
If you want to maintain crocuses in the house, put the tubers immediately in a pases, filled with soil planter. Make it dark and cool.
Crocus bulbs from the retail trade are pretreated and do not necessarily need a cold phase. Nevertheless, you should place the planter cool and only after the shoot in the room.
The best time to put on crocus tubers
Varieties that bloom in spring come in the fall in the ground. Already in the following spring the flowers develop.
Autumn crocuses are planted in August. They grow very fast and drive flowers in September. The flowering period extends to October and in good weather even to November.
So plant the tubers properly
The depth of the plant hole depends on the size of the onion. It should not be more than twice as deep as the tuber is long.
Do not plant the tubers too low or too high. If the ground cover is too thick, it will take too long for the earth to warm up and the onion to start drifting. If the onion is too high, the crocus later tilts slightly.
Crocus bulbs do not need to be overwintered in the house
Crocuses are completely hardy. They survive very low temperatures without freezing. Without a prolonged cold phase, the tubers would hardly or not at all drive out anyway.
Tips & Tricks
When planting crocus bulbs, a flower bulbs planter is very helpful. By means of the tightened lever, the soil is dug out and poured back into the planting hole when the lever is released. Practical are the markings on the edge, with which you cut out the planting holes in the desired depth.
