Fortunately, in spring and summer you can always make use of your own private herb garden. But what should happen to those left behind when it gets colder outside? Our recommendations: Simply dry or freeze the herbs. We describe both variants step by step, so that you can enjoy your delicious herbs even in the autumn and winter season!

Drying herbs - this is how it's done step by step

You can simply hang the herbs from your garden to dry and then store them in decorative jars. In this way, the fresh aroma is preserved and the herbs survive the winter easily.

Important: Use only intact herbs for drying without exception. Damaged are not suitable. Sort out any herbs that have squeezed or otherwise stems and leaves.

    Wash the herbs under running warm water. Dry thoroughly with kitchen paper. Take three to five stems each and tie them into a bundle. Hang your herb bundles in a warm and well ventilated place. Pack the dried herbs in airtight jars.

Attention: Never expose your herbs to direct sunlight for drying!


Practical tip: You can also dry your herbs in the oven. To do this, place the bundles in the oven at 30 to 35 degrees Celsius. Leave the door ajar - just clip a wooden spoon between them. It takes several hours for the herbs to dry completely. Do not raise the temperature! Otherwise, the leaves lose their aroma.

Freezing herbs - this is how it's done step by step

Instead of drying them, you can also freeze your herbs. For basil, dill, tarragon, parsley and chives, the frosty variety is even better.

    Wash the herbs under running warm water. Dry thoroughly with kitchen paper. Cut / chop the herbs small. Then fill in small portions in ice cube trays. Add water to the herbal tricks. Put the whole thing in the freezer.

This is how herbal ice cubes are made, which you can bring out at any time if you want to refine your food with it. Just add the cubes while cooking.

Tips

To use the herbs for salad dressing, thaw the cubes and conveniently drain the excess water through a sieve.
