To grow coriander successfully, a sunny to partially shaded location is important. Since the plant reaches stature heights of up to 90 centimeters, the location should also be sheltered from the wind. In a nutritious, humus-rich soil the vertigo extends its roots joyfully. Ideally, the soil is loose, permeable and fresh and moist.
How does sowing go according to your wishes?
Since coriander seeds prove to be tolerant of cool spring temperatures, there is nothing against cultivation by direct seeding. In mild locations, the time window opens in April, otherwise you sow directly into the bed in May. Proper planting takes place in these steps:
Depending on the prevailing temperature conditions, the seeds germinate within 14-21 days. Alternatively, pull the young plants on the windowsill in herb or Pikiererde. In the partially shady place, germination is rapid at 20-25 degrees Celsius.
When and how is coriander harvested?
Leaf coriander harvest shortly before flowering, which usually begins in June / July. Pick the leaves from top to bottom, the flower and thus the growth is delayed. If you grow coriander by sowing yourself, the harvest time for the seeds starts after an average of 24 weeks. If the seeds have a light brown color, cut off the whole umbels. Hung in the dry place, the grains mature in peace.
How is spice coriander propagated?
As an annual plant is for propagation only sowing into consideration. That's why proactive hobby gardeners are already providing seed for the next generation at harvest. Part of the fully matured seeds are stored in a dark, dry container for this purpose. The Vietnamese coriander, which is not related to genuine coriander, is to be propagated as a knotweed by cuttings.
Tips & Tricks
On the balcony you can easily grow coriander yourself in a box or bucket. Since the spice plant reacts unproceptively to transplanting, place the seeds directly in the planter. In herbal soil kept constantly moist, the seedlings will not be long in coming. Select the weakest specimens later, so that a planting distance of 15 centimeters is created.
