How do I properly care for my coconut palm?
In the trade, various types of coconut palms are offered, on the one hand the genuine coconut palm Cocos nucifera, on the other hand the house-grown Lytocaryum weddelianum. This comes from South America, resembles the real coconut palm, but has completely different claims.
The real coconut tree needs a lot of sun, heat and water for your well-being, as well as a high humidity. These conditions can hardly be offered in a normal living room. A humidifier or regular spraying with low-calcium water can help.
The right casting
Pour your coconut palm regularly. Avoid waterlogging, otherwise the nut will start to rot. The potting soil should not be too strong, so that the irrigation water drains well. In winter, your coconut palm needs slightly less water than in the summer months. It is best to use lukewarm water with a low calcium content.
The fertilizer
The coconut palm is quite demanding. Therefore, it should be fertilized regularly in the summer months. From May to October, give about every 14 days some liquid fertilizer in the irrigation water.
The repotting
The coconut palm needs a relatively large plant pot, not only for the nut, but also for the spreading roots. It should be repotted every two to three years. Use palm soil from specialist retailers or garden soil mixed with sand. The top half of the coconut must always look out of the potting soil.
The coconut palm in winter
