Originally from China kiwi was refined by the New Zealand breeders and introduced to Europe. Today, apart from New Zealand and Chile, European countries such as Italy, France and Greece are the largest exporters.
Kiwi (Latin Actinidia deliciosa) is a berry fruit of the culture ray stylus. The fruits are oval, about 6-8 cm tall and have a brown, hairy shell. They grow in large numbers on a high-climbing, winding shrub and are harvested immature. During transport and storage, they ripen.

Cultivation countries worldwide
The hardy kiwi smoke is cultivated not only in China and New Zealand, but also in Europe. France, Italy, Greece and Spain supply the other European countries with the vitamin-rich kiwifruit. Chile is another big supplier to European supermarkets. The kiwis from Taiwan, Japan, South Korea or the USA are not exported to Europe.
Where do kiwis come from Germany?
In Germany, the kiwis have season all year round. The fruits belong to the standard assortment of the German supermarkets including the discounters. In the period from April to November they come to us from the southern hemisphere, from Chile and New Zealand. In September, the harvest begins in Italy, Greece and France.
Tips & Tricks
The kiwi smoke has meanwhile also found its way into the German gardens. Particularly frost-resistant are the frost-resistant mini kiwis with a smooth, edible shell.
