In order for the cherry laurel hedge to look attractive and grow evenly, it must be cut regularly. Take note of our tips and tricks, this care measure is no rocket science even with mature hedges.
The right time
Even if you can cut back the cherry laurel in principle all year round, it is advisable to observe fixed cutting intervals. The spring crop should be done by the end of March, with a second cut at the end of July. If you want to prune the cherry laurel hedge only once a year, pruning should be done immediately after flowering.
Note hedge protection times!
From 1 March to 30 September, the radical pruning of hedges to protect wildlife is prohibited. If you would like to restore an old or partially bleached cherry laurel hedge to the trunk, you must do this work before or after this period in any case. Only the shape cut is allowed throughout the year.
However, if you do any cutting work, you should search the wood for breeding birds and, in deference to our feathered friends, postpone the work should you spot a bird family in your hedge.
The right cutting tools
For a professional cut, you need a smooth, manual hedge trimmer with sharp cutting surfaces. Serrated shears are stronger and easier to handle than those with serrated blades. With these cutting tools, you can easily cut through even thicker branches and the pruning is easy by hand. With pruning shears, even thick branches inside the shrubs can be easily cut out.
Clean and disinfect the cut surfaces of the tools before work. This prevents germs or fungal spores from penetrating the inevitable wounds into the plant and causing disease.
The evergreen laurel cherry must not be cut with electric or petrol-driven hedge trimmers. These hurt the pruning of the large leaves of the cherry laurel and let the hedge look like a long time shredded.
