Digger cherry laurel: our tips make it easy
How strong cherry laurel actually is is underestimated by some garden owners. Over the course of a few years, the evergreen young plants develop into magnificent shrubs, which take up a lot of space, especially in small gardens and if they are not regularly cut. Then it may be necessary to dig up the shrub and transfer it to another location where it may unfold undisturbed.
The right time
It is advisable to dig a laurel cherry that you want to move during the dormancy. It lasts from November to April. If you do not want to transplant the laurel cherry afterwards, you can remove the shrub all year round.
Excavating the laurel cherry
Make a well around the bush before transplanting. This should be at least sixty centimeters from the main trunk. Dig the furrow so deeply that you find the topmost roots of the cherry laurel.
From here, shoot vertically with the spade into the ground so that the roots are cut off. The root bales tapped in this way can be lifted well out of the earth.
Remove the cherry laurel
Very large shrubs, which should not be transplanted, you can shorten before digging and saw off the trunk afterwards. Dig the root system all around with a spade and prick the roots as far as possible with the blade tip. The thick main roots are then severed with an ax.
Now take advantage of the leverage of the trunk and press it alternately in different directions. As a result, the roots remaining in the soil are torn off and you can remove the stem residue.

Since the laurel cherry is extremely robust, it roots quickly after the relocation.
Tips & Tricks
When planting, consider how big a laurel cherry can become. The larger the shrub is and the longer it has been in its place, the more difficult it becomes to dig up and move the cherry laurel. If you want to remove a whole hedge, we recommend using a winch or pulley.
