The cherry blossoms are not there for their own sake, their job is mainly to produce fruits and seeds. Of course, some cherry varieties are cultivated exclusively for their spectacular flowering in the spring. However, in most gardens, sweet and sour cherries are planted to harvest fruit.
In a young cherry tree, the flowering is less than the shoot formation. Finally, a strong crown framework should first develop before the tree begins to bear fruit. Flowering is influenced by many factors: nutrient supply, crown structure, site and weather conditions.
The regular cut promotes the flowering joy. It is important to distinguish between leaf and flower buds. A flower bud is thicker than a shoot or leaf bud. If the pruned branch ends with a flower bud, the shoot does not continue to grow at this point. Therefore, always on a leaf bud from which a new shoot can develop, be cut.

The sweet cherry begins to bloom in mid-April. The delicate flower can be endangered by the late frost. Wet weather at flowering time affects the fruit set. The sour cherry is better protected from late frosts from late April to early May due to its relatively late flowering period. At the end of the flowering period you should protect the cherry trees with nets from the birds, which otherwise eat the fruits in half-ripe state within a few days.

In order for the flower to become a fruit, it must be pollinated and its ovules located in the ovary must be fertilized. Most sweet cherry varieties are not self-fertile and need a pollinator variety that needs to flower at the same time. Among the sour cherries there are many self-fertile varieties in which already pollination of the scar with pollens of the same tree leads to fertilization.
