Almost every plant forms two cotyledons after germination. Only then are the normal, typical for the plant leaves. Caution is advised when planting, because cotyledons are very sensitive. They break easily and tolerate neither temperature fluctuations nor great dryness.
Which substrate is suitable for cotyledons?
Cotyledons get their nutrients from the seeds. They therefore do not need a nutritious soil - on the contrary, the substrate contains many nutrients, which leads to a supersaturation.
As a planting substrate for cotyledons is therefore special Anzuchterde. As the cotyledons of some plant species rot very quickly, sterilized soil is recommended.
When is the best planting time?
Most cotyledons need a lot of light. Therefore, the seeds are almost always seeded in the spring so that the cotyledon receives sufficient daylight.
If you sow succulents, you can choose a later season as long as you provide enough brightness.
Which location is suitable?
Since cotyledons are still very sensitive, they are usually grown in seed pots or seed pots. These are placed in a place where they are not exposed to excessive temperature fluctuations. Temperatures should not be too low depending on the plant species. Frost is harmful in any case.
Which distance is to be kept?
The planting distance depends on the size of the cotyledons. He should be about as tall as the seedling itself.
How do you plant cotyledons correctly?
Gently loosen the soil in which the cotyledons are previously standing. For this purpose, a kitchen fork or a wooden stick are suitable. Grasp the cotyledon gently with a pair of tweezers and slowly pull it out of the substrate.
Make a hole in the prepared shells and set the cotyledons so that the roots are not kinked. The stem of the cotyledon must not be covered with soil.
Carefully push some soil with your finger and only lightly press it down so that the cotyledons have enough hold. If necessary, stabilize it with a stick.
Tips
Cotyledons are very sensitive. They do not like it bad if you transplant them. The planting of cotyledons should therefore only take place if it is unavoidable, for example because you have seeded the seed too densely.
